Downspout Collection Systems — Protect Your Austin Foundation

Your gutters work — they collect water from every inch of your roof. The problem is where they send it. Most downspouts discharge water directly against the foundation, saturating the soil at the most critical point of your home’s structural base.
A downspout collection system captures that water and routes it underground to a safe discharge point — away from your foundation, away from your yard’s low spots, and away from your neighbor’s property.
Austin Drainage + Landscape Development has installed downspout collection systems across Austin since 1984. It’s one of the highest-impact drainage improvements a homeowner can make.
What a Downspout Collection System Does

A downspout collection system connects your existing downspouts to underground Schedule 40 PVC pipe. That pipe routes water to a designated discharge point — typically a street, drainage easement, or dry well positioned away from the house and below the natural grade.
The system handles the full volume your gutters produce during a heavy storm, sized based on your roof’s square footage and Austin’s typical rainfall intensity. A properly sized system never backs up or overflows.
Why Downspout Discharge Location Matters in Austin
Austin’s clay soil absorbs almost no water during a storm — it sheds it. When a downspout discharges at the foundation, that water has nowhere to go except against the house. Over time, repeated saturation cycles expand and contract the clay, exerting pressure against foundation walls and leading to cracking, settling, and expensive structural repairs.
Moving downspout discharge even 10 feet away from the foundation dramatically reduces this cycle. Moving it underground and routing it to a discharge point 30+ feet away eliminates it.
Signs You Need a Downspout Collection System
- Water pooling around your foundation after rain
- Erosion or bare soil at downspout exits
- Gutters that overflow during storms
- Basement or crawlspace moisture
- Soggy soil immediately around the house that takes days to dry
- Foundation cracks or settling
Downspout Collection vs. Downspout Extensions

Downspout extensions — the plastic tubes that route water a few feet from the exit — are a temporary fix at best. They discharge water close to the foundation and above ground, where it pools and eventually works its way back toward the house.
Underground downspout collection routes water completely away from the structure and discharges it at a safe point. It requires excavation and proper pipe installation, but it solves the problem permanently rather than relocating it slightly.
Integration with French Drains
Downspout collection and French drains work together as a complete drainage system. French drains handle subsurface water moving through the soil. Downspout collection handles roof runoff at the source. Many Austin homes with drainage problems need both — addressing only one leaves the other problem active.
We design systems that integrate both where needed, with a single discharge point handling combined flow. → Learn more about our French drain installation
Downspout Collection FAQs
How far should downspouts discharge from the foundation?
At minimum, discharge should be 6 feet from the foundation. Ideally, underground collection routes water to the street or a drainage easement 20–50 feet away depending on yard size and grade.
Can downspout collection connect to the city storm drain?
In Austin, discharge to a street or drainage easement is typically permitted. Direct connection to city storm drain infrastructure requires approval. We handle all permitting questions during the site visit.
What if I don’t have a good discharge point?
For properties without natural grade to the street or a drainage easement, we design dry well systems that store and slowly disperse water underground. We evaluate every discharge option during the site assessment.
Does downspout collection require gutter replacement?
No. We connect to your existing downspouts at the base. You don’t need to replace or modify your gutters.
